Feed Your Soul
One of the most striking observations I’ve made over my lifetime as an intuitive and healer is that countless people suffer from a sort of psychic anorexia—that is, they starve their souls of the sweet, nurturing elements of life and don’t even think about what nurtures their spirits. Six-sensory, spiritual people know that feeding their soul is as important and necessary to their well-being as feeding their body is. Soul-starvation makes people bitter, angry, and resentful, creating a toxic vibration that causes others to recoil, leaving them isolated and lonely. Most of us starve our souls without even realizing it: We do it when we gulp down unloved food; when we race through our days focused on the future, thus missing the scent of the flowers and the warmth of the sunshine; when we forget to go for a walk, look at the stars, enjoy a great conversation with a friend, or sit by the fire with a good book; when we watch too many newscasts or listen to too many tales of darkness, foregoing our bike rides, bubble baths, and playing with the dog; and when we give up romance, pleasure, and the enjoyment of small things. Instead, we should be drinking in and savoring these wonderful moments.
Julia Cameron understands how essential it is to the intuitive and creative spirit to feed the soul by advocating what she calls an artist date, or a once-a-week appointment to indulge in something for your soul to feast on. It can be anything from scouting secondhand stores to roller skating in the park, renting a foreign film and making a big bowl of popcorn, or gallery or museum hopping. Like a well that runs dry, the soul gets used up quickly and needs to be replenished regularly. Doing so sprinkles what my friend Annette calls “fairy dust” in your life. It makes the ordinary sparkle, and attracts miracles and magic to your front door.
Are you willing to frolic in life’s garden? Are you willing to feed and nurture your spirit? Are you able to stop your psychic anorexia and nourish your soul every day? Are you willing to sip the sweetness of life and then pass the cup of goodness to others? If you are, you’ll experience all you desire and more. Nurturing your soul first and freely—or choosing to pursue what makes you happy so that you can infuse others with your enthusiasm—is basic to living in a six-sensory way.
If you feel stuck, change the channel and focus on what feeds your soul, and then do it. Recognize the feast of life placed before you—a good CD, a fresh cup of coffee, birds singing, a warm breeze, a walk through the neighborhood, a great novel. Only you know what nurtures your spirit, and when you find it, you’ll bring light to yourself and those around you. The lovers of life are the healers of life because they’re the believers of life.
